Berber Tattoo symbols on a vintage Multi Colored Ourika rug
This authentic Vintage Moroccan Ourika Rug is part of a special collection by Soukie Modern.
the designs are inspired by common tattoo symbols in the Atlas.
The Ourika valley is located south of Marrakech along the northern slopes of the High Atlas. The cold rivers makes it harder to spindle and wash the wool extensively, therefore Ourika rugs tend to have a chunkier soft, blanket-like character. These beautiful rugs are comprised of un-dyed cream and brown wool and after the 90’s Ourika tribal weavers tended to add a lot of color in their design using cotton yarn. These rugs are woven with a bigger space between the knots making the rug more malleable and comfortable to rest on. This one-of-a-kind whimsical work of art is both durable and warming to any space. Easy to clean, this rug is suitable for spaces experiencing heavy foot traffic.
Moroccan Rugs can be vacuumed, preferably with a vacuum that has no beater bar, but if so just raise it to the highest setting to cause the least friction possible to the wool. Vacuum from side to side, and don’t forget to flip it over every once in a while and vacuum the back as well. If the weave is too long for your vacuum, shake your rug outside or hang it + hit it with a broom handle if you can to remove the dust.
For smaller boucherouite style rugs you can wash the in your washing machine on gentle with cold water then dry outside in the sun. Because they are easy to clean you can feel free to use these rugs in areas experiencing high traffic like kitchens and bathrooms. Medium sized boucherouite can go to a load front industrial cleaners and Large area rugs can be taken to a professional carpet cleaner annually or as needed.
